Overcoming Obstacles: 7 Tips to Build Your Self-esteem
by Dr. Cynthia Barnett
One of the most difficult things we face when trying to improve our self-esteem is overcoming obstacles. It's an unfortunate fact that obstacles are a part of life; they often show up when least expected and threaten to undermine our coping mechanisms.
There is a way we can work with obstacles - to see them in a different light - and to work on building the skills necessary to stop them from bringing forth fear and inertia into our lives.
Here are 7 quick tips to help you deal with restrictions in your life and how to overcome them:
Tip #1: Believe in yourself.
You hold the capacity to bounce back from whatever life throws at you. This ability is in every one of us. You have the genius to handle different circumstances that show up in your life. You've already faced barriers in your life and you can face new ones with courage as long as you believe in yourself.
Tip #2: Be persistent.
Obstacles can't be overcome with inaction; however, any obstacle can be conquered when you take action and exercise persistence. Trust the process and never give up!
Tip #3: Remain calm.
Take some time to gather your wits and center yourself. Obstacles can seem threatening when you're emotionally confused. Getting upset will add fuel to the fire and won't help matters. Instead, try to stay calm when confronted with obstacles and know that you have the ability to ride the waves with confidence and dignity.
Tip #4: Gain additional support.
Always remember you're not alone. Everyone is faced with challenges in their lives. It never hurts to discuss a problem you're facing with a trusted person in your life.
It's okay to share your feelings. Talk with a close friend or relative who can help you remain calm and provide the necessary support when you need it most.
Tip #5: Be realistic.
See an obstacle for what it truly is, no bigger, no smaller.
Tip #6: Look for hidden opportunities.
Think about how you can turn an obstacle into an advantage (every cloud has a silver lining.)
Tip #7: Keep a positive outlook.
Try your best not to view obstacles in a negative frame of mind. This will inhibit and delay your ability to deal with them effectively. By changing your thinking and approach, you will ensure your success in dealing with any obstacle that comes your way.
Miraculous things happen when you consciously choose to overcome your fears. New doors of opportunities will open and you'll begin to see the world in a way that is open, positive and free.
Start combating your fears by putting these 7 tips into practice. You'll find that overcoming obstacles will help propel your life forward and provide an opportunity to face the future with renewed vigor and confidence.
